Protecting your SmartPhone

Given the widespread use of Smartphones, it’s very likely that hackers will be targeting these devices. Often times we have more data stored in these than our desktops. We carry them with us all the time. They also are enticing to cybercriminals because there’s a premium payment system attached to them. A virus could enter and rack up charges.

A few tips to safeguard your Smartphone:

  1. Annoying as it may seem, creating a pin to access your home screen is something to consider. If you lose your phone, this will prevent most people from accessing your data.
  2. Be cautious when using Wi-Fi because if you’re in an unsecured area you run the risk of an unauthorized entry.
  3. When downloading an “app”, make sure to do so only from authorized and well known sites.
  4. Just like your computer, you need to keep the software updated. Click on the manufacturer updates when prompted.
  5. Check with your provider about security and antivirus programs. There are some mobile anti-virus programs now available from major companies such as Norton, Kaspersky, McAfee etc.
  6. Be careful when reading emails and clicking on links you are not familiar with.

Some providers have a remote erase service which lets the owner erase all data in the event the phone is lost.

If your battery is constantly being drained- there could be a virus running silently behind the scenes pulling data from your phone.

Review your bill regularly and look for suspicious charges.
